Two History Professors Receive Faculty Fellowship Awards
Eve Kornfeld and Walter Penrose, both professors of history, have each received a Darlene Shiley Honors Faculty Fellowship Award. This award recognizes their impressive pedagogical accomplishments within the Weber Honors College.
Eve Kornfeld commented, “It has been such a joy and a privilege to teach in the Honors Program all these years. As I gratefully receive this award, I remember the wit and wisdom of Henry Jansen, who first encouraged me to offer an honors class decades ago; Stephen Weber, whose generous support allowed the Honors College to expand and flourish; and all the wonderful honors students I have taught over the years, whose interdisciplinary insights and spirited conversation have so enriched my life at SDSU.”
This is among other awards she’s received from SDSU, such as the CAL Excellence in Teaching Award in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the SDSU Senate Excellence in Teaching Award, and the CAL Exceptional Service Award.
Walter Penrose said he is thrilled to receive this award, and plans to use the funds to conduct research in France. This award is attributed to his course, Honors 313: Justice and Ethics in the Humanities, and the emphasis he put on creating an inclusive, student-centric environment that encourages them to openly ask questions and share their thoughts. His course focused on issues such as freedom of speech vs. hate speech, the aftermath of slavery, and ethics in government and judicial systems. This is also not the first of his awards from SDSU, which include two University Grants, and a Critical Thinking Grant.
Both are praised specifically for their “curricular enrichment experiences that allow students to understand the course material within a relevant and meaningful context” and for creating “a warm, inviting, open atmosphere in class.”
