Bio

Mat Schulze is the director of the Language and Applied Research Center and a professor of German in the Department of Comparative International Studies. He was born in Finsterwalde (Germany). He did his teacher training for German and Russian in Leipzig (Germany) and Kaluga (Russia) and got his Ph.D. in Language Engineering (Applied Linguistics) from the University of Manchester Institute for Science and Technology (UMIST). For ten years, Mat worked at universities in Sunderland and Manchester (England) and for sixteen years at the University of Waterloo (Canada), where he was the director of the Waterloo Centre for German Studies. He was the co-editor of the CALICO Journal on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) for eight years. CALL is also his main area of research, and his interests are in language education and social bilingualism. He is the co-editor of Die Unterrichtspraxis / Teaching German, the journal of the American Association of Teachers of German.

Fun Facts

Mat took up open water swimming later in life, when he had the chance. Now he tries to make time to swim from La Jolla Cove to the Shores once a week all year round.

Mat serves on the Senate of SDSU.

Community Engagement

Mat is the Principal Investigator of the SAILN project. SAILN is the southernmost site of the California World Languages Project that provides professional development opportunities for world languages teachers in California.
