Bio

Jennifer Sheppard is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rhetoric and Writing Studies at San Diego State University, where her teaching and research explore the intersections of theory, practice, and pedagogy in online writing instruction, visual and multimodal rhetoric, and professional communication. Her scholarship has been published in Composition Studies, Computers and Composition, the Journal of Literacy and Technology, Research in Online Literacy Education, and in several edited collections, including “Designing Texts: Teaching Visual Communication” and “Multimodal Composition and Writing Transfer Pedagogy.” She is also the co-author of “Writer/Designer: A Guide to Making Multimodal Projects, now in its third edition with Bedford/St. Martin’s” (2022).

At SDSU, Sheppard has served as Graduate Advisor and as Associate Director of the Lower Division Writing Program, roles in which she supported curriculum development and collaborated in the training and mentoring of new graduate teaching assistants. She teaches a diverse array of courses, ranging from first-year writing to upper-division classes in visual and popular culture rhetorics, professional writing, and graduate seminars in rhetoric, literacy, and technology. Many of her courses participate in the SDSU Sage Project, which pairs students with local community organizations for hands-on learning that provides fresh perspectives and meaningful contributions to community partners. Sheppard is also a recipient of the College of Arts and Letters Excellence in Teaching Award at SDSU.
