Bio
Erin Flewelling earned her B.A. from San Diego State University in French and English with an emphasis in creative writing, originally intending to teach French in secondary schools. Instead, she spent two decades gaining a wide range of experiences—teaching preschoolers French and gymnastics (not simultaneously), reading voraciously, transcribing medical reports, homeschooling her children, and coaching her daughters in debate. Her role as an executive assistant at a small nonprofit sparked a deep appreciation for professional writing and the importance of crafting clear, audience-focused communication.
Motivated by a desire to return to the classroom, Erin pursued an M.A. in Rhetoric and Writing Studies at SDSU, which she completed in 2011. Since then, she has taught writing at SDSU and various community colleges. In 2017, she became Assistant Director of SDSU’s Writing Center, where she enjoys collaborating with tutors and supporting students across disciplines.
Erin is particularly interested in affective teaching practices, humanizing online education, and designing assignments that students genuinely enjoy. Through her work, she continually affirms a truth she’s long understood: writing is hard, but it matters—and when students are given space to write about what they care about in a supportive environment, they grow into stronger, more confident writers.
