SDSU International Business Alumna Named 2021 Rising Star
Carolina Verdugo, a brand licensing industry professional, recognized by the Licensing International organization

Carolina Verdugo was one of six recipients of the Rising Star Award by Licensing International, an organization that recognizes licensing professionals around the world for “their commitment, passion, and contributions to the brand licensing industry.”
Verdugo is the director of brand management at Beanstalk, a brand licensing company based in New York, where she leads the company in the Mexico and Latin America markets. Verdugo has been driving geographical footprint expansion in Latin America where, under her tutelage, business at the agency has grown six-fold in the past two years.
In 2013, Verdugo earned a B.A. in international business/marketing from SDSU and a licenciatura de negocios internacional degree from CETYS Universidad in Mexicali, through the international business MEXUS dual degree program at SDSU.
Verdugo studied abroad in both Mexico and France. “Studying abroad is a requirement to understand the intricacies of working in a global economy/market,” she said.
The exchange program taught her to appreciate culture and differing viewpoints. “It pushed me to trust myself and have the confidence to get outside of my comfort zone — to take risks to excel,” Verdugo said. “For business, it teaches you to speak up, even though you may disagree with the majority, to propose new ideas and gives you a new perspective to challenge the status quo.”
Studying abroad helped her acquire the business acumen necessary to understand and manage a variety of topics within a global marketplace.
When she thinks back on her days in the international business program, she thinks about how it prepared her for her career journey. “It gives you the necessary tools to navigate not only language barriers, but cultural nuances while working with international markets,” Verdugo said.
