Freshman Success Program

About

San Diego State University created the Freshman Success Program to assist students in their transition to the university. The program provides students with a small college atmosphere within a larger university. These programs can help students get off to a good start during their first semester at SDSU. The Freshman Success Program is offered in three variations:

University Seminar (General Studies 100 A, B, C)

General Studies 100 is a one-unit course designed to assist students with a successful transition to the university. Class size is limited to no more than 15 students. In this class, students are given the opportunity to establish a mentoring relationship with their instructors. Students also acquire academic survival strategies, personal adjustments and goal setting skills, as well as knowledge of campus resources and policies.

Integrated Curriculum:

Integrated Curriculum is a comprehensive program that links instruction between a general education course, writing class, study group, and University Seminar. Professors in the General Education class and writing class collaborate so that the concepts and methodologies of the G.E. discipline are used as the basis for writing projects in the composition course. A graduate student, who attends the G.E. class, teaches the study group that meets twice a week. The study group leader collaborates with both the G.E. and the writing professors. Consultation during the semester also includes the University Seminar professor. This cooperation among instructors is valuable in many ways and nearly impossible to achieve in a large university that does not offer special curricula for freshmen.

Living/Learning Center:

The Living/Learning Center is a residential program that includes Integrated Curriculum. Maya Hall is reserved for students participating in the Living/Learning Center. In addition to being enrolled in an integrated curriculum package, theses students live together and receive additional academic support through workshops, tutoring, and easy access to computers and reference materials.
