Update on CAL Building> More information and visuals are available on the CAL Building Web site. Demolition of the Family Studies Building to make way for the new College
of Arts and Letters building begins as soon as the Spring 2004 semester
is over. After Spring 2004 commencement the hard demolition will begin,
resulting in some noise to the north of Nasitir The project was funded through the CSU 2003 fiscal year Capital Outlay Program and accounts have been set up to make expenditures and encumbrances for the full contract sum. A recent increase in steel and other metal prices caused costs in the building to increase 15%. SDSU, through Tony Fulton's office, contracted with the architect Barnhardt Inc. early and have been able to mitigate these increases with some building efficiencies. None of these changes impact faculty and departmental office space. Over the last few weeks, Larry Piper and/or I have talked with most department and program chairs and representatives who will be moving into the new building about their specific floor plans. A few final, niggling issues are now taken care of. Faculty and staff seem very pleased with the final plans as we move forward to the construction phase. Thus far there have been few delays and it is expected that the building will be completed as scheduled on January 2006. Stuart C. Aitken |
