Feminist Theory in Science

Description

In my research project I attempt to go beyond the general bases of feminist critiques of science by using feminist theory in science. This is a new and emerging area of feminist theory that attempts to bridge critiques of science with practical transformations of science, and thus invites the feminist scientist into the meaning-making process. I am currently working on a paper entitled "Should Feminists Clone? And If So, How? Molecular Technologies and the Feminist Scientist." In this paper, I focus on the dilemmas faced by feminist scientists and others who deal with "difficult moments" arising from the collision of technoscientific progress with the struggle for reproductive autonomy. Examining both the perils and possibilities of new and emerging biotechnologies such as cloning and genetic engineering through the critical lens of feminist theory in science, I witness the moment(s) of impact between feminist and lesbian science fiction, the protocol for transformations in the Maniatis lab manual, and cyberfeminism.
