A Success Index for Internships in International Business and EconomicsProfessor(s)Renatte K. Adler, Professor in Economics DepartmentEconomics DescriptionThis project is developing a means to evaluate the experiences of hundreds of SDSU students who have completed an internship course in I.B. or Economics in the past 10 years. The Success Index is based on the results of a nation-wide study by the RAND Institute that looked at perceptions of both corporate and university representative regarding necessary qualities for university undergraduates to succeed in employment in today's global workforce. Because the RAND report found that both corporate and university respondents agreed that students were receiving sound theoretical training but were lacking in numerous skills, such as communication, ability to work in a team, or cross-cultural expertise, our analysis looks at the merits of student internships as a means of addressing the skills gap. The results of our econometric analysis of data obtained from students' reports on their internships in our program point to successful outcomes for making the transition from lecture-based classrooms to the working environment. Our Success Index is also a valuable tool for assessing outcomes in academic departments interested in how well students are being prepared for this transition after graduation. Results were presented at the Amer.Econ Assoc./Allied
Social Science Assoc. meetings in San Diego, 2004; a portion of this
study is also being developed into a thesis by an Economics graduate
student. The article is being submitted to the Journal of Economic Education. Contact InformationRenatte K. Adler |
