Anthropology
Assistant Professor--Linguistic Anthropologist

The Department of Anthropology at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure track faculty appointment in linguistic anthropology at the Assistant Professor rank to begin August 2008. We seek candidates with active projects relating to language renewal, preservation, or maintenance that will complement our developing emphasis in applied anthropology. Candidates should have experience with discourse analysis and strengths in both descriptive linguistics and sociocultural anthropology. Candidates will be expected to teach a basic course in descriptive linguistics as well as a course in the ethnography of their area of regional interest, language and culture, applied linguistic anthropology, and related cultural or linguistic topics in the department’s new state-of-the-art Discourse Analysis Lab.
Preference will be given to candidates who have completed a Ph.D. in Anthropology by August 2008 with a geographic focus on the Pacific Rim, specifically Asia, Southeast Asia, Oceania, the Southwestern U. S., California, Mexico, or ethnic populations from these areas in southern California. A strong record of research, publications, collaborations within and outside the academic community, and acquisition of external funding should be evident. Candidates should show evidence of success in working with a diverse student population and in relating to community groups. We are especially interested in candidates who can involve students in research and who are prepared to participate in joint projects in the department or university. We are a department committed to the four-field approach and we seek a candidate who also supports the four-field model.

OPEN RANK Professor of English and Comparative Literature: Creative Writing – Fiction

Open rank tenure-track position. Successful candidate will have distinguished teaching experience and publications in fiction. Ph.D. or MFA preferred. The applicant should have significant experience in teaching fiction as well as other genres of creative writing and literature. The applicant should be a well-published writer, with at least two volumes of fiction or creative nonfiction, who has a deep commitment to teaching, writing, and working with students, and one who sees these activities as complementary rather than competing. Teaching experience should include creative writing workshops, form and theory seminars, and literature classes. Administrative experience is desirable. European Studies

Director, International Business Program/
Professor of Regional Studies and/or Foreign Languages
Senior faculty position as Director of a large undergraduate International Business program that encompasses coursework in the College of Arts and Letters and the College of Business Administration. Duties include teaching one course per term; chairing the International Business program committee, composed of liberal arts and business faculty; overseeing International Business curriculum and supervising academic advising of approximately 850 majors. The Director will serve as Arts and Letters Liaison to the Center for International Business Education and Research (CIBER) and will be responsible for multiple degree programs with universities in Mexico, Brazil, Chile, and Canada, including the MEXUS Program. The Director will assume a leadership role in external development initiatives (grants, gifts, endowments). The position also involves interaction with the bi-national regional international business community and local community college and high school feeder institutions.
Candidates must have a doctorate and a teaching and research record appropriate for tenure in one of the academic departments of the College of Arts and Letters at SDSU. Involvement in international education is highly desirable as is foreign language proficiency, a doctorate in a foreign language, or research in languages other than English. Previous experience in the following areas is highly desirable: department chair; teaching regional studies or foreign languages; interdisciplinary curriculum and program development, and international student exchange and internship development. Assistant Professor--Latin American Religions

San Diego State University, Department of Religious Studies, invites applications for a tenure-track position at assistant professor rank in Latin American Religions, to begin Fall semester 2008.
This tenure-track position is focused on the religious traditions of Latin America in their historical and contemporary contexts. We will consider candidates from a wide variety of disciplinary expertise and period specializations in the field of Latin American Religions, but are especially seeking scholars with a specialty in gender, ethnic, race, class, and/or postcolonial studies. Candidates will be knowledgeable about Meso-American religions, Christianity in its Catholic, Protestant, and Pentecostal manifestations, popular/folk traditions, and new religions. The position requires appropriate language skills, fieldwork, and/or life experience in Latin America, as well as training in Latin American cultural traditions and history. Successful candidates will have skill teaching undergraduate students, and an interest in developing international study for undergraduates in México, Central and/or South America. The Department of Women's Studies at San Diego State University invites applications for a tenure-track position, open rank. We seek to strengthen our offerings in the following area:
Women and Cultures of Violence: Expertise in local and global conditions of gendered violence including domestic violence, militarization, sex trafficking, and migration. Familiarity with national and transnational theories and policies, as well as strategies for change.
A Ph.D. in Women's Studies or a related field with a concentration in women's or gender studies is strongly preferred.
- Ability to teach courses relevant to violence in the home, war, migration, and sex trafficking to specifically bolster curriculum in this area.
- Ability to develop curriculum to enhance internationalization and transnational feminism while serving concerns of gender, race, class and sexuality.
- A demonstrated commitment to undergraduate teaching of a very diverse student population.
- A commitment to strengthen a successful graduate degree program.
- A strong record of scholarly research appropriate to level of appointment.
- Commitment to work collaboratively with colleagues and community and to developing transnational networks in this field of research.
