Costa Rica Internship Program in Sustainable Business Development

Professor(s)

Renatte K. Adler, Director and Professor in Economics

Department

Economics

Description

As part of the International Business and Economics Internship Program, Renatte Adler has developed the internship project in Turrialba, Costa Rica. Each summer, the project sends 4-5 students majoring in International Business or Economics to work at CATIE (translated as the Institute of Tropical Agricultural Research and Education.) At CATIE, SDSU students work with researchers at the Center for Commercialization of Ecological Companies while residing at the CATIE campus in the mountain valleys of rural Turrialba. This unique partnership provides students the opportunity to enhance Spanish language skills while developing expertise in the business culture of Central America. This opportunity has the additional benefit of providing training in global business ethics since it seeks to promote businesses that enhance the wealth of Central America while conserving the natural resources unique to its tropical rain forests. The Center staff works with Central American companies that do not undermine the environmental resources of the region, such as producers of organic coffee or labeled timber (cultivated rather than taken from rain forests) and eco-tourism providers. Our interns provide valuable assistance in creating marketing materials and business plans for promoting "green" businesses of Central America to both U.S. and European markets.
