give to cal nowThe College of Arts and Letters places great emphasis on study abroad opportunities for our students. Many different study abroad opportunities exist for our students, including countries in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Some study abroad scholarships are available.

Did you know?

In the past twelve years, more than 12,000 SDSU students have studied abroad through one of the 335 affiliated international education programs in 52 countries. More than a dozen CAL majors and minors now require study abroad for graduation.

Current Programs


Alternative Spring Break in Ghana, West Africa

During this three-week summer adventure, students will take workshops in Twi language, Ghanaian music, literature, drum & dance and other topics focusing on the rich cultural expressions of the country’s people. Travel to Ghana’s second largest city, Kumasi, in the Asante region and learn about Ghana’s rich traditions in making kente cloth, woodcarving and adinkra printing. Alajuela, Costa Rica

Learn Spanish while living with a Costa Rican family for the Summer in Alajuela, Costa Rica. Earn up to 4 units of Spanish taught by native Spanish speaking instructors from an accredited university, and 3 upper division units in Latin American Studies, or Business Administration in 5 weeks. Business internships offered. Enjoy exciting field trips, excursions, and cultural events. And, of course, you would enjoy Latin music and dance, and great food. Beijing, China

Join us for the summer experience of a lifetime in partnership with Capital Normal University in Beijing, China. Earn three units of credit. Participate in intensive learning about Chinese language, and experience Chinese culture and society firsthand. China Service Learning Program

Since the summer of 2004, Tsinghua University has successfully organized the Educational Poverty Alleviation and Social Service Activities. Participants have taught English and computer skills, conducted social survey, and provided lectures and intercultural communication exercises to students and teachers in those counties. Coimbatore, India

Join us for a truly unique opportunity to visit the manufacturing and business center of Coimbatore, India, located in southern state of Tamil Nadu. This summer program will consist of classroom hours and in-field experiences such as side trips to businesses, ecological preserves, local homes, and various historical and sightseeing attractions. Cultures of Central Europe: Hungary

Join us for the opportunity of a lifetime, studying and traveling through historic and beautiful Hungary, Vienna (Austria), and Prague (Czech Republic)! Learn about Hungarian society, its people, and how Hungarian social, political, economic, and cultural perspectives compare and contrast with neighboring countries and the United States. During this trip, students will learn about Hungarian history dating to the Roman Empire, visit castles in the countryside, explore Jewish Hungary, meet with members of the Roma community, and much more. The Ethics of Development: Guatemala

Work and study during the Winter break in Guatemala. Immerse yourself in a community based service-learning trip to Guatemala, organized in partnership with Terra Education. This program will explore local sectors such as health and nutrition, income generation, education and rural development and offers students opportunities for participatory and sustainable development through service learning within local communities. Florence, Italy

The Florence Summer Program presents our students with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy a truly unique international experience that introduces them to the magnificent culture of both the past and the present while taking SDSU courses which allow them to make progress towards their degree. Florence is an ancient and exciting city that has much to offer students in the areas of learning and enjoyment as there is always something to see or do in the eight weeks they will spend in Florence. Hanoi, Vietnam

Earn six SDSU resident credits upon successful completion of the program. Spend four-weeks in Vietnamese language training (not for foreign language credit). Visit numerous official and cultural sites, including excursions to Ho Chi Minh’s mausoleum, the Temple of Literature, Perfume Pagoda, the museum of Vietnamese history, and other pagodas and historical sites. The cultural and historical impact of London is dazzling, and even today this exciting city on the Thames River remains an intriguing milieu as well as an international center that has bestowed so much on the political and cultural growth of Europe and the world. London is an exciting city in which to live and study. Among the world's most beautiful capitals, it is rich in art, music, theater and literary history. Mixtec Language Program in Oaxaca

Mixtec is an indigenous language of Mexico spoken by people living in the states of Oaxaca, Guerrero, and Puebla, many of whom have migrated and established communities throughout northern Mexico and the United States. The Summer Intensive Language Program is focused on acquiring sufficient linguistic skills to communicate within the dialect taught in the classroom as well as establishing a foundation for understanding dialectic differences that one will encounter as they move among Mixtec speakers. SDSU's Spring semester in Paris is a unique opportunity to expand your educational experience, learn French, participate in French cultural events, visit historical sites and become acquainted with another way of life. Since the Middle Ages, Paris has drawn students from around the world to study at its renowned universities and to experience its cosmopolitan lifestyle. Shanghai, China

Spend a summer living and studying at a modern university campus in Shanghai, a truly international city, while earning 3 units toward your degree. Students in all majors will benefit from the experience gained through this program. Lectures about Chinese history and society and updates on modern China will be given in English by SDSU faculty and Chinese guest lecturers. Spanish Language Immersion in Comillas, Spain

The Spanish Language Immersion Program in Comillas is a four-week, intensive study of the language and culture of Spain. Participants will have the opportunity to live in the beautiful town of Comillas (Cantabria) in northern Spain, which is located near the capital city of Santander and the pristine beaches on the Bay of Biscay. Zapotec Language Program in Oaxaca

Zapotec is one of the most widely spoken indigenous languages of Oaxaca, Mexico with some speakers of Isthmus Zapotec in Chiapas and Veracruz. Participants will experience a full immersion in Zapotec culture and language through home stays with Zapotec speaking families. This summer intensive program is taught by native Isthmus Zapotec speakers and linguists through the Casa de La Cultura in Juchitán. Read more about the Zapotec program...
